So basically black and white represent that people can't escape fate/destiny.

The red strings are inspired of the Chinese mythology "Red thread of fate" although there slightly different here as they represent good things like good fortune, lucky and other good things.

The blood red strings on the opposite side represent bad fortune, dead and other bad things.

Kismet name also literally means fate/destiny.

Depending on what string they are using their dress changes color:

Blood red: Black

Red: White

They are also portrayed as evil in most stories but they're mostly neutral and both take joy in giving people fortune or misery.
